Hotel Porticciolo, Portofino — A Review: Italian Seclusion on the Ligurian Coast
Land in Genoa aboard a Gulfstream G700, and 25 minutes later you are at the Mediterranean's most enchanting harbor — the standard summer configuration of an iFlyPlus member
🏛️ Why Portofino?
In July, the Ligurian coast is the Mediterranean at its most enchanting. Portofino — the pastel fishing village folded into the hills — has drawn everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to George Clooney for a century. But those who truly know understand this: the right hotel decides whether your Portofino is a photo stop or a way of life.
Hotel Porticciolo's distinction is its position at the very heart of the harbor — open the window to painted fishing boats on blue water, and a 30-second walk puts you aboard a private yacht. This is not "a place to stay." It is an entry point into Italian living.
✈️ Getting There: The iFlyPlus Private Aviation Options
For travelers departing Beijing or Shanghai who value efficiency, we recommend three routings:
Option A — Nonstop to Milan + chauffeured car
- Charter: Gulfstream G650ER, Beijing → Milan Malpensa (about 10.5 hours)
- Transfer: iFlyPlus member car service, Milan → Portofino (about 1.5 hours, through the Tuscan countryside)
- Total: roughly 12 hours including the ground leg
Option B — The empty-leg play
- The iFlyPlus private travel curation team curates empty-leg sectors daily
- Example: a Paris → Milan empty-leg sector, saving roughly ¥50,000–80,000 at member rates
- Pair it with one night in Milan, then a next-morning transfer to Portofino
- Suited to members with flexible schedules — the astute choice
Option C — One-stop, all-inclusive
- iFlyPlus offers a private jet + luxury hotel package: charter + 5 nights at Hotel Porticciolo + yacht charter
- One member-rate bundle instead of negotiating with multiple suppliers
- A 1-on-1 dedicated advisor follows everything from visas to itinerary detail
🏨 The Hotel, in Depth
Location & Facade
Hotel Porticciolo stands on the north side of the harbor, facing the bay ringed by colored houses. The building is a 19th-century Genoese palazzo; the facade keeps its original ochre and yellow tones, with bougainvillea climbing the balcony rails.
From the outside it lacks the showiness of newer luxury builds — but that restrained elegance is exactly what sets it apart in Portofino. Those who know, know they chose right.
Rooms: Sea Colors and Italian Composure
We stayed in a Deluxe Sea View Suite (about 55 m²):
- View: floor-to-ceiling windows facing the harbor. At 6 a.m., the first sunlight crosses the water as fishing-boat engines fade in and out — Portofino's own alarm clock
- Design: Italian minimalism, a Carrara marble bathroom, Frette 600-thread-count linens
- Amenities: Bvlgari toiletries (the classic Bergamot line), Nespresso machine, a B&O sound system
- Terrace: about 10 m², with two rattan chairs and a small round table — a bottle of local Cinque Terre white wine here at dusk was the most memorable moment of the trip
The member's view: booking through iFlyPlus, V2 members and above enjoy room-upgrade privileges. Our suite lists at about €890 per night on public channels; the member rate came to about €620 per night — savings of roughly ¥50,000–80,000 across seven nights.
Dining: The Mediterranean, Unembellished
La Tavernetta, on the ground floor facing the harbor:
- Breakfast: the Italian classics — fresh cornetti, Parma ham, local olives and tomatoes. The highlight is the orange juice, squeezed by hand from 40 oranges each morning
- Lunch: the spaghetti alle vongole, with clams caught that day off the Ligurian coast
- Dinner: by reservation. We tried the chef's Omaggio al Mare tasting menu — 8 courses paired with 5 Ligurian wines, €280 per person
Member note: V3 Purple Diamond members earn 1.5× permanent points on hotel dining (permanent, never expiring), so a €280 dinner accrues points that offset your next spend directly.
Service: Italian Warmth, Professionally Tempered
Portofino's luxury hotels tend toward one of two extremes: over-attentiveness or detachment. Hotel Porticciolo finds the delicate midpoint.
What we experienced:
- 48 hours before arrival, a personal email asking about dietary preferences and arrival time
- At check-in, the lobby manager greeted us in person with Prosecco and chilled towels
- Twice-daily housekeeping (morning service plus evening turndown)
- 24-hour concierge — on day three we booked a snorkeling trip in the Portofino marine reserve on impulse; it was arranged within 30 minutes
The iFlyPlus layer: V3 Purple Diamond members receive three proposals presented immediately. During our stay, our dedicated advisor proactively coordinated:
- A half-day private yacht charter (with captain and chef)
- A same-day Florence round trip (Gulfstream G650, departing 9 a.m., back by 4 p.m.)
- A private visit to Portofino's church — a privilege that typically requires weeks of advance arrangement

This excludes V2's waived V1 annual fee (¥28,888) and the 1.2× permanent points. The astute choice lives in exactly these details.
⚠️ Honest Shortcomings
- No on-site pool: swimming relies on the public beach and the private dock — an adjustment for pool-accustomed guests
- High-season noise: the harbor is lively on July–August days; request a room away from the main street
- Tight parking: Portofino's parking is extremely limited; reserve through the hotel in advance — your iFlyPlus advisor can assist

🗣️ What Members Say
"Last July I booked Portofino through iFlyPlus — a G650 nonstop from Beijing to Milan, and the hotel upgraded us straight to a sea-view suite. What surprised me most: the advisor knew my wife's birthday in advance, and a handwritten card with flowers was waiting in the room. That level of detail is beyond any high-end travel agency." — Ms. Zhao, financial institution partner, 8 flights a year, V2 Rose Diamond member
